Back Pain Treatment In a study designed to test the effectiveness of paracetamol (or acetaminophen) as a treatment for lower back pain, 1643 patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) the 547 subjects in the placebo group were given pills containing no medication; (2) 350 subjects were in a group given pills with paracetamol taken at regular intervals; (3) 546 subjects were in a group given pills with paracetamol to be taken when needed for pain relief. (See “Efficacy of Paracetamol for Acute Low-Back Pain,” by Williams, et al., Lancet, doi: 10.1016/S0140-6736(14)60805-9.) Is this study an experiment or an observational study? Explain.

- List the sample space of each experiment. Picking a one-digit numberarrow_forwardDr. Ngo would like to know whether there is a relationship between the number of minutes per day that a person spends in prayer or quiet meditation and the degree of conflict that they have in their interpersonal relationships. He asks participants to complete an assessment of interpersonal conflict, with scores ranging from 1 (very low interpersonal conflict) to 50 (very high interpersonal conflict). He collects data from a random sample of 10 participants. The data is as follows: Participant Minutes in Prayer/Meditation Conflict in Relationships 1 3 25 2 30 14 3 0 29 4 23 21 5 5 32 6 16 6 7 0 43 8 18 12 9 7 37 10 27 19 Using SPSS, conduct the appropriate analysis. Feldweg explained that allergy to sulfites is usually seen in patients with asthma. The typical reaction is a sudden increase in asthma symptoms after eating a food containing sulfites. Studies are performed to estimate the percentage of the nation’s 10 million asthmatics who are allergic to sulfites. In one survey, 38 of 500 randomly selected U.S. asthmatics were found to be allergic to sulfites. Find and interpret a 95% confidence interval for the proportion p of all U.S. asthmatics who are allergic to sulfites.arrow_forward
- Quit Smoking: The New England Journal of Medicine published the results of a double-blind, placebo-controlled experiment to study the effect of nicotine patches and the antidepressant bupropion on quitting smoking. The target for quitting smoking was the 8th day of the experiment. In this experiment researchers randomly assigned smokers to treatments. The following is an excerpt from this same study. “ A total of 311 subjects (34.8 percent) discontinued one or both medications. Seventy-nine subjects stopped treatment because of adverse events: 6 in the placebo group (3.8 percent), 16 in the nicotine-patch group (6.6 percent), 29 in the bupropion group (11.9 percent), and 28 in the combined treatment group (11.4 percent). The most common adverse events were insomnia and headache.” Recall that 160 smokers took the placebo and 244 smokers used nicotine patches. - A group of 500 patients who suffer from migraine headaches is asked to participate in a study to determine the effectiveness of a new medication. The patients are divided randomly into two groups, one was given the actual medication and one received a placebo pill. After 6 months of treatment, 65% of the patients who took the medication had fewer migraines, while only 35% of those who took the placebo had fewer migraines.a. What is the treatment variable?b. What is the response (or outcome) variable?C. Was this an observational study or a controlled experiment? Explain how you knowarrow_forwardCar Window Skin Cancer? A study suggests that exposure to UV rays through the car window may increase the risk of skin cancer. The study reviewed the records of all 1050 skin cancer patients referred to the St. Louis University Cancer Center in 2004. Of the 42 patients with melanoma, the cancer occurred on the left side of the body in 31 patients and on the right side in the other 11. A. Is this an experiment or an observational study? B. Of the patients with melanoma, what proportion had the cancer on the left side? Show what numbers you divide and give answer to 3 decimal places. C. A bootstrap 95% confidence interval for the proportion of melanomas occurring on the left is 0.579 to 0.861. Clearly interpret the confidence interval in the context of the problem. D. Suppose the question of interest is whether melanomas are more likely to occur on the left side than on the right. That is, are over 50% of melanomas on the left side? The respondent specifies the number of servings of various food items they consumed over the previous week. The dietary cholesterol is then quantified for each respondent. The researchers were interested in assessing if there was an association between dietary cholesterol intake and high blood pressure. In a large sample of individuals who had completed the questionnaire, 250 persons with a high dietary cholesterol intake (greater than 300 mg /day) were selected and 250 persons with a low dietary cholesterol intake (less than 300 mg/day) were selected. The 500 selected participants had their medical history taken and were classified as having normal or high blood pressure. The data are given here.
