Chapter 13, Problem 16TYPSS
Summary Introduction

To analyze:

(a) An experimental study designed to test the given hypothesis that the ability to withstand extreme drying reduces any infection from fungus in this rotifer species.

(b) To provide an explanation for how the genetically identical, asexual rotifers are able to evade pathogens.

Introduction:

Rotifers are small aquatic animals and fall under the Rotifera phylum. Their size ranges from 50 to 1000 µm. They are found in a variety of habitats like freshwater, brackish, and marine environments and they have very high reproductive rates. A species of rotifer, a small freshwater invertebrate, abandoned sexual reproduction millions of years ago. A remarkable feature of the rotifer’s life cycle is its ability to withstand extreme drying. When the watery environment surrounding the rotifer dries out, so does the rotifer, and it can be blown in the wind to a new environment. Rotifers that are blown to water will rehydrate and resume an active life.

Explain the impact William B. Travis has made.
If PCR was performed on the fragment of DNA shown below using "5'-TAGG-3" and "3'-TCTA-5'" as the primers, how many base pairs long would the PCR product be? To help with this, remember the antiparallel structure of DNA and that primers are complementary and antiparallel to the target sequence that they bind to. Hint: Check out the 5' and 3' labels....they are important! 3’- T  A  T  C  C  G  A  C  A  A  T  C  G  A  T  C  G  A  T  T  G  C  C  T  T  C  T  A  A -5’ 5’- A  T  A  G  G  C  T  G  T  T  A  G  C  T  A  G  C  T  A  A  C  G  G  A  A  G A  T  T – 3’
When setting up a PCR reaction to act as a negative control for the surface protein A gene...
