Below is a population of ornate box turtles (Terrapene ornata) which inhabit a grassland habitat. The number of turtle icons represents the relative number of turtles in each region. Ornate box turtles can have a range of shell patterns and colors, which are controlled by their genes.
New housing developments and a shopping center are constructed in the box turtles' habitat. Now the population is fragmented into three smaller populations.
Turtles in Area 2 and 3 are frequently hit by cars when they try to cross the road. Turtles with drab or dark-colored shells are more likely to be hit by cars because they are harder to see.
Turtles in Area 3 are also located near a popular outdoor recreation area. People frequently find turtles in this area and take them home to keep as pets. Turtles with more colorful patterns are more likely to be spotted and removed from the population.
