Concept explainers
Target costs, effect of process-design changes on service costs. Solar Energy Systems (SES) sells solar heating systems in residential areas of eastern Pennsylvania. A successful sale results in the homeowner purchasing a solar heating system and obtaining rebates, tax credits, and financing for which SES completes all the paperwork. The company has identified three major activities that drive the cost of selling heating systems: identifying new contacts (varies with the number of new contacts); traveling to and between appointments (varies with the number of miles driven); and preparing and filing rebates and tax forms (varies with the number of solar systems sold). Actual costs for each of these activities in 2016 and 2017 are:
2016 | 2017 | |
Average cost per new contact | $ 8.00 | $ 7.00 |
Travel cost per mile | 0.55 | 0.65 |
Preparing and filing cost per new system | 275.00 | 250.00 |
After experiencing high costs in 2016. SES used value engineering to reduce the cost of selling solar heating systems. Managers at SES want to evaluate whether value engineering has succeeded in reducing the selling cost per sale by the targeted 8% in 2017.
Actual results for 2016 and 2017 for SES are:
Actual Results for 2016 | Actual Results for 2017 | |
Sales of heating systems | 175 | 188 |
Number of new contacts | 225 | 240 |
Miles driven | 1,900 | 1,750 |

COST ACCOUNTING
- Did SES achieve the target cost per sale in 2017? Explain.arrow_forwardSolve the following: A company recently established a branch to sell its most popular fan. The company purchases these fans and stores them in a warehouse. The fans are then shipped from the warehouse to both the home office and the new branch, FOB destination. Home office management is responsible for setting the transfer price of the fans charged to the branch in a manner that will measure the long-run incremental cost of supplying the fans to the branch on a continuing basis. Per unit costs for the fans are P50.00 purchase price P2.50 shipping cost to warehouse P3.00 handling cost including P1.00 of allocated administrative overhead P3.50 shipping cost to branch paid by home office P1.25 shipping cost to home office The minimum transfer price that home office should charge the branch to meet its measurement objective is?arrow_forwardDrain Your Brain, a local video arcade, is considering the addition of a new virtual reality system. Several different vendors have been contacted. The owner of the arcade, affectionately referred to by patrons as Wizard, has narrowed his selection to one of three choices (mutually exclusive alternatives). The data below describes the three systems under evaluation. Annual costs are based on electricity consumed, replacement parts based on use, and preventive maintenance. Revenue estimates are provided by the vendors based on regional data and relative thrill as compared to other arcade games and a cost of $1.00 per play. a) Which method (PW, AW, FW, IRR) would be best (easiest) to use to select the preferred alternative? b) What is the implicit study period for this problem? c) Which alternative should be selected when MARR is 15%? (AWA=$ ?)arrow_forward
- Plot the relationship between customer-service costs and number of service reports. Is the relationship economically plausible?arrow_forwarda) Using incremental analysis, determine if the component should be purchased from the outside supplier? Would your decision in part a) change if the company has the opportunity to rent out its facilities that it currently uses to manufacture the component for $5,500 ? Show full computations Why “Opportunity Costs” are not recorded in the financial books but are considered a relevant cost.arrow_forwardPocket Umbrella, Inc. is considering producing a new type of umbrella. If Toni plans to charge [an average price of $5,000] for a basic hot tub installation, what will be the break-even volume? a. Suppose Toni wants to break even with 18 installations, what average price must she…arrow_forwardQueen's Move plc specializes in household removals and storage services. One of the services AHC offers is delivery of the purchased products to the customer's work site. Because not all customers take advantage of the delivery service option, ACH adds 10 percent to the cost of the products purchased to cover the delivery cost. A business intern spent the summer at ACH. The intern's assignment was to analyze the delivery service and recommend a better way to charge customers for using it.
