Simultaneously, a solvent carrying a weight fraction X i n of the same chemical enters from the right at a flow rate of F 2 . Thus, for stage i, a mass balance can be represented as

F 1 Y i 1 + F 2 X i + 1 = F 1 Y i + F 2 X i ( P12.9.1)

At each stage, an equilibrium is assumed to be established between Y 1 and X 1 as in
