Chapter 12, Problem 58P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation: Synthesis of the muscalure from acetylene and other required reagents is to be devised.

Concept introduction: Terminal alkynes can be converted into internal alkynes by forming new CC bond. This bond is formed by treatment of alkyne with strong base and alkyl halide.

The addition of H2 in presence of catalyst is known as catalytic hydrogenation reaction. Lindlar catalyst consists of palladium deposited on calcium carbonate which is poisoned or deactivated by lead or sulfur. In presence of Lindlar catalyst, alkyne is reduced to cis-alkene.

Devise a synthesis of muscalure, the sex pheromone of the common housefly, from acetylene and any other required reagents.
Devise a synthesis of each compound from phenol (C6H5OH) and any other organic or inorganic reagents.
Ibufenac, a para-disubstituted arene with the structure HO2CCH2C6H4CH2CH(CH3)2, is a much more potent analgesic than aspirin, but it was never sold commercially because it caused liver toxicity in some clinical trials. Devise a synthesis of ibufenac from benzene and organic halides having fewer than five carbons.
