Chapter 12, Problem 1MWE
Summary Introduction

The medical terms are created by the arrangement of basic word elements. The prefixes, suffixes, word root, combining form, and combining vowels are called as the word elements. All of these word elements are not included in the medical term. It may contain either only a prefix and a word root or only a word root and a suffix.

Answer to Problem 1MWE

The visual examination of the vagina is termed as colposcopy.

Explanation of Solution

The medical term colposcopy is formed by the word elements prefix and suffix along with a combining form of the vowel. Here, in this medical term, the prefix colp- refers to the vagina and the suffix –scopy denotes the visual assessment. The vowel –o- in between is the combining form. Thus, colposcopy is a diagnostic procedure performed to examine the vagina and cervix visually by using an optical magnifying instrument called colposcope.
