In a study conducted by Zogby International for the Democrat and Chronicle, more than 700 New Yorkers were polled to determine whether the New York state government works. Respondents surveyed were asked questions involving pay cuts for state legislators, restrictions on lobbyists, term limits for legislators, and whether state citizens should be able to put matters directly on the state ballot for a vote. The results regarding several proposed reforms had broad support, crossing all demographic and political lines.
Suppose that a follow-up survey of 100 individuals who live in the western region of New York was conducted. The party affiliation (Democrat. Independent. Republican) of each individual surveyed was recorded, as well as their responses to the following three questions.
- 1. Should legislative pay be cut for every day the state budget is late?
Yes ___ No ____
- 2. Should there be more restrictions on lobbyists?
Yes ___ No ___
- 3. Should there be term limits requiring that legislators serve a fixed number of years?
Yes ___ No ___
The responses were coded using 1 for a Yes response and 2 for a no response. The complete data set is available in the file named NYReform.

descriptive statistics to summarize the data from this study. What are your preliminary conclusions about the independence of the response (Yes or no) and party affiliation for each of the three questions in the survey? - 2. With regard to question 1, test for the independence of the response (Yes and no) and party affiliation. use α = .05.
- 3. With regard to question 2, test for the independence of the response (Yes and no) and party affiliation. use α = .05.
- 4. With regard to question 3, test for the independence of the response (Yes and no) and party affiliation. use α = .05.
- 5. Does it appear that there is broad support for change across all political lines? explain.

- 4. Freelance reporter Irwin Fletcher is examining the historical voting records of members of the U.S. Congress. For 175 representatives, Irwin has collected the voting record (yes or no) on 16 pieces of legislation. To examine the relationship between representatives' votes on different issues, Irwin has conducted an association rules analysis with a minimum support of 40% and a minimum confidence of 90%. The data included the following bills: Budget: approve federal budget resolution Contras: aid for Nicaraguan contra rebels El_Salvador: aid to El Salvador Missile: funding for M-X missile program Physician: freeze physician fees Religious: equal access to all religious groups at schools Satellite: ban on anti-satellite weapons testing The following table shows the top five rules with respect to lift ratio. - A polling organization uses random digit dialing of registered voters in a county to gauge the voters’ opinions about a ballot initiative to increase taxes that would pay for a new county park. The polling organization will investigate whether there are differences in how voters respond based on the highest level of education completed. The phone survey asked the voters contacted whether they approve or disapprove of the tax increase. The voters were also asked to indicate their highest level of education completed: high school, bachelor’s degree, or master’s degree. Which of the following is the appropriate test to investigate whether there is an association between opinion about the ballot initiative and highest level of education completed? - Because of the complex nature of the U.S. income tax system, many people have questions for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Yet an article published by the Detroit Free Press titled “Assistance: IRS Help Centers Give the Wrong Information” discusses the propensity of IRS staff employees to give incorrect tax information to taxpayers who call with questions. Then IRS Inspector General Pamela Gardiner told a Senate subcommittee that “the IRS employees at 400 taxpayer assistance centers nationwide encountered 8.5 million taxpayers face-to-face last year. The problem: When inspector general auditors posing as taxpayers asked them to answer tax questions, the answers were right 69% of the time.” Suppose an independent commission was formed to test whether the 0.69 accuracy rate is correct or whether it is actually higher or lower. The commission has randomly selected n = 180 tax returns that were completed by IRS assistance employees and found that 105 of the returns were…arrow_forwardA meat-processing company in the Midwest produces and markets a package of eight small sausage sandwiches.
