Explanation of Solution
American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organization (AFL-CIO) is the product formed with the merger of the two that is the AFL & CIO in 1955 which was to represent the trade unions in the U.S. It wasn’t considered a union but an umbrella organization with which there were 85 national unions affiliated. It worked as a voice of the labor movement for resolving the issues and disputes between the unions affiliated through coordination at state and national level. It has its headquarters in Washington D.C.
The political and organizational alignment of AFL and CIO made it possible to get merged. They came and supported each other and offered the government a no-strike pledge along with participating in the war labor board & brought a system of grievance arbitration.
Introduction:
The American Federation of labor: This federation was founded in 1886 which considered itself as the ‘house of labor’ to which all the labor unions and workers should agree. It was considered the most conservative trade union of the industrial world.
The Congress of Industrial Organizations: In 1935, a committee for industrial organization was founded, named CIO that is Congress of Industrial Organizations, which became fully independent in 1938. It helped in the organization of factories, mills & offices.
