After taking a nutrition class, a big Annie’s® Mac and Cheese fan decides to improve the levels of protein and fiber in her favorite lunch by adding broccoli and canned chicken. The nutritional information for the foods referred to in this exercise are given in the table below.
Nutrition Information per Serving | ||||
Nutrient | Mac and Cheese | Broccoli | Chicken | Shells |
Calories | 270 | 51 | 70 | 260 |
Protein (g) | 10 | 5.4 | 15 | 9 |
Fiber (g) | 2 | 5.2 | 0 | 5 |
- a. [M] If she wants to limit her lunch to 400 calories but get 30 g of protein and 10 g of fiber, what proportions of servings of Mac and Cheese, broccoli, and chicken should she use?
- b. [M] She found that there was too much broccoli in the proportions from part (a), so she decided to switch from classical Mac and Cheese to Annie's Whole Wheat Shells and White Cheddar. What proportions of servings of each food should she use to meet the same goals as in part (a)?

- Cholesterol Cholesterol in human blood is necessary, but too much can lead to health problems. There are three main types of cholesterol: HDL (high-density lipoproteins), LDL (low-density lipoproteins), and VLDL (very low-density lipoproteins). HDL is considered “good” cholesterol; LDL and VLDL are considered “bad” cholesterol. A standard fasting cholesterol blood test measures total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. These numbers are used to estimate LDL and VLDL, which are difficult to measure directly. Your doctor recommends that your combined LDL/VLDL cholesterol level be less than 130 milligrams per deciliter, your HDL cholesterol level be at least 60 milligrams per deciliter, and your total cholesterol level be no more than 200 milligrams per deciliter. (a) Write a system of linear inequalities for the recommended cholesterol levels. Let x represent the HDL cholesterol level, and let y represent the combined LDL VLDL cholesterol level. (b) Graph the system of inequalities from part (a). Label any vertices of the solution region. (c) Is the following set of cholesterol levels within the recommendations? Explain. LDL/VLDL: 120 milligrams per deciliter HDL: 90 milligrams per deciliter Total: 210 milligrams per deciliter (d) Give an example of cholesterol levels in which the LDL/VLDL cholesterol level is too high but the HDL cholesterol level is acceptable. (e) Another recommendation is that the ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol be less than 4 (that is, less than 4 to 1). Identify a point in the solution region from part (b) that meets this recommendation, and explain why it meets the recommendation.arrow_forwardA shopper buys cat food in bags of 3 lbs. He is analyzing the amount of time in minutes and seconds it takes for him and his teammates to complete a 5-kilometer race and a 20-kilometer race. The results are shown in the accompanying table. 5-km Race 17:34 17:52 18:06 16:44 17:21 17:38 18:32 17:07 16:58 17:56 20-km Race 72:41 71:54 72:20 70:36 75:42 80:36 73:14 74:22 71:26 74:39 Interpret how the shape of the times for the 5-kilometer race compares to the shape of the times for the 20-kilometer race. The distributions for the 5-kilometer race and 20-kilometer race are both symmetric, and there are no outliers. The times for the 5-kilometer race peak between 1717 and 1818 minutes, while the times for the 20-kilometer race peak between 7171 and 7575 minutes. The distribution for the 5-kilometer race is roughly symmetric, and the distribution for the 20-kilometer race is skewed right. The time for one member of the team to complete the 20-kilometer race is unusually high.…arrow_forwardCandy Bar Weight, x Calories, yHershey’s Milk Chocolate®Nestle’s Crunch®Butterfinger®Baby Ruth®Almond Joy®Twix® (with caramel)Snickers®Heath® 44.2844.8461.3066.4547.3358.0061.1239.52 230230270280220280280210Source: Megan Pocius, student at Joliet Junior College(a) Draw a scatter diagram of the data, treating weight asthe independent variable.(b) What type of relation appears to exist between theweight of a candy bar and the number of calories?(c) Select two points and find a linear model that containsthe points.(d) Graph the line on the scatter diagram drawn inpart (a).(e) Use the linear model to predict the number of calories ina candy bar that weighs 62.3 grams.(f) Interpret the slope of the line found in part (c).arrow_forward
