Photon Technologies, Inc., a manufacturer of batteries for mobile phones, signed a contract with a large electronics manufacturer to produce three models of lithium-ion battery packs for a new line of phones. The contract calls for the following:
Photon Technologies can manufacture the battery packs at manufacturing plants located in the Philippines and Mexico. The unit cost of the battery packs differs at the two plants because of differences in production equipment and wage rates. The unit costs for each battery pack at each manufacturing plant are as follows:
The PT-100 and PT-200 battery packs are produced using similar production equipment available at both plants. However, each plant has a limited capacity for the total number of PT-100 and PT-200 battery packs produced. The combined PT-100 and PT-200 production capacities are 175,000 units at the Philippines plant and 160,000 units at the Mexico plant. The PT-300 production capacities are 75,000 units at the Philippines plant and 100,000 units at the Mexico plant. The cost of shipping from the Philippines plant is $0.18 per unit, and the cost of shipping from the Mexico plant is $0.10 per unit.
- a. Develop a linear program that Photon Technologies can use to determine how many units of each battery pack to produce at each plant to minimize the total production and shipping cost associated with the new contract.
- b. Solve the linear program developed in part (a), to determine the optimal production plan.
- c. Use sensitivity analysis to determine how much the production and/or shipping cost per unit would have to change to produce additional units of the PT-100 in the Philippines plant.
- d. Use sensitivity analysis to determine how much the production and/or shipping cost per unit would have to change to produce additional units of the PT-200 in the Mexico plant.

- A company needs to choose one supplier for a particular type of silicon wafer used in the production of semiconductors. The company has three options. Supplier A sells the silicon wafers for $2.40 per wafer, independently of the number of wafers ordered. Supplier B sells the wafers for $2.20 each but does not consider an order for less than 2,000 wafers. Supplier C sells the wafers for $2.00 each but does not accept an order for less than 3,000 wafers. Assume an order setup cost of $200 and an annual requirement of 10,000 wafers. Assume a 20% annual interest rate for holding cost calculations. Which supplier should be chosen to minimize the total annual cost for the wafers, and what is the optimal order quantity? If the replenishment lead time for wafers is three months, determine the reorder point based on the on-hand level of inventory of wafers.arrow_forwardA company makes three components for sale. The components are processed on two machines: a shaper and a grinder. The time required. (in minutes) on each machine are as follows: Component Shaper Time Grinder Time A 6 4 B 4 5 C 4 2 The shaper is available for 7200 min. and grinder for 6600 min. No more than 200 units of component C can be sold, but up to 1000 units of each of the other components can be sold. In fact the company has orders for 600 units of component A that must be satisfied. The profit contributions for components A, B and C are $8, $6 and $9 respectively. Formulate the problem for deciding the production quantities. Solve the problem using Excel Solver. Run the sensitivity analysis report in Excel Solver. What are the objective coefficient ranges (Range of Optimality) for each coefficient. Interpret these. What are the dual prices for each constraint? Interpret these. What are the right-hand side ranges (Range of Feasibility)? Interpret them. The company has stores in Chicago and Denver. The Chicago store orders 590 keyboards per week and the Denver store orders 410. He needs 8,250 kilograms of milk per month. Suppose Bruno orders 10,000 kilograms each time. What is his average inventory (in kilograms)? Suppose Bruno orders 6,250 kilograms each time. How many orders does he place with his supplier each year? Note: Round your answer to 1 decimal place.
