Chapter 11, Problem 1CC
Summary Introduction

To determine: The two components of the afferent nervous system.

Introduction: Nervous system is the network of nerve cells and fibers that transmit the information to the body parts. The nervous system controls and coordinates the body parts. The system monitors the actions by transmitting signals to and from the body.

Explanation of Solution

The afferent nervous system carries signals from the body to the brain; they are also called the input neurons for the brain. These neurons carry signals from the stimulated area and transmit it to the brain. The stimulated area is located in the skin where the sensory receptors are present.

The afferent neurons are composed of two components, which are as follows:

  • Sensory receptors: The sensory receptors are present beneath the skin lining. They are of four types such as mechanoreceptors that carry pressure changes, chemoreceptors that carry chemical changes, thermoreceptors that carry temperature changes and photoreceptors that transmit change in the light intensity information.
  • Sensory neurons: The neurons transmit information from the sensory receptors to the brain. These neurons work by generating an electric impulse for the transmission of signals.
Conclusion

Two components of afferent neurons are sensory receptors and sensory neurons.
