Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The molecules among ${\text{H}}_{\text{2}}$, $\text{HCl}$, ${\text{CO}}_{\text{2}}$ and ${\text{H}}_{\text{2}}\text{O}$ that might show infrared absorption spectra have to be identified.

Concept introduction:

The gross selection rule states that when an infrared active molecule rotates, then the dipole moment of the molecule must be changed.  The molecules that have permanent dipole moment are infrared active, whereas the molecules that do not have permanent dipole moment are infrared inactive.
