Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The number of protons, neutrons, and electrons present in Samarium-153 should be determined.
Concept Introduction:
Samarium-153 is a pharmaceutical element that emits gamma rays which can be detected by external imaging. It is approved for use by the medical board for treating patients with osteoblastic metastases.
(b)
Interpretation:
The balanced equation for the emission of β particles during the decay of samarium-153 should be determined.
Concept Introduction:
When a nucleus has many protons and neutrons, one of the protons or neutrons gets transformed to others and thus balance is maintained. In the case of neutron decays, protons are formed and are called beta minus and in the case of proton decays, neutrons are formed and are called beta plus.
(c)
Interpretation:
The activity of a solution having 150 mCi of samarium-153 after 8 days should be determined.
Concept Introduction:
Most of the radioactive substances undergo decay and the time taken for half of the substance to disintegrate is said to be a half-life. This indicates that nuclear species changes to other nuclear particles and emit energy during the process.
