Chapter 10, Problem 61EAP

The Mass of an Atmosphere. What is the total mass of Earth’s atmosphere? You may use the fact that 1 bar is the pressure exerted by 10,000 kilograms pushing down on a square meter in Earth’s gravity. Remember that every square meter of Earth experiences this pressure from the atmosphere above it. Alternatively, you may start with the English unit value for pressure of 14.7 pounds per square inch and convert to kilograms for your final answer. Remember that the surface area of a sphere of radius is  4 π r 2 .

Question 4 Every year over 105 km2 of forest area is lost to human activity. This is about one seventh the area of Texas as shown on the map in red. If our planet has 19.4 x 106 km2 of forest area, how long will it to take to lose it all? Hint: divide the total forest area by the given rate of deforestation.   Calculations:      Answer:         Question 5 The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is an area of plastic waste twice the size of Texas in the Pacific Ocean. It is estimated there are 1.8 x 1012 pieces of plastic in this patch. If the world’s population is 8 x 109, how many pieces of plastic are there per person? Hint: divide the total pieces of plastic by the number of people.   Calculations:     Answer:
The mass of the Earth is about 6 x 1021 metric tons, and the mass of the Sun is about 2 x 1027 metric tons.  About how many times more is the mass of the sun compared to the mass of the Earth? Put the numbers into Scientific Notation.  Do your calculations using the product or quotient rule.  Then write your answer as a Standard Number.  What is the proper name of the answer?
Calculate the pressure and density of Earth’s atmosphere at an altitude of 10 ?? using twomethods:a) not considering the lapse rate, andb) considering the lapse rate.?0 = 298? and , ? =??/?ℎ = −6.5 × 10−3 ?/m You can also find the whole question in the image below.
