Concept explainers
At the beginning of each week, a machine is in one of four conditions: 1 = excellent; 2 = good; 3 = average; 4 = bad. The weekly revenue earned by a machine in state 1, 2, 3, or 4 is $100, $90, $50, or $10, respectively. After observing the condition of the machine at the beginning of the week, the company has the option, for a cost of $200, of instantaneously replacing the machine with an excellent machine. The quality of the machine deteriorates over time, as shown in the file P10 41.xlsx. Four maintenance policies are under consideration:
- Policy 1: Never replace a machine.
- Policy 2: Immediately replace a bad machine.
- Policy 3: Immediately replace a bad or average machine.
- Policy 4: Immediately replace a bad, average, or good machine.
Simulate each of these policies for 50 weeks (using at least 250 iterations each) to determine the policy that maximizes expected weekly profit. Assume that the machine at the beginning of week 1 is excellent.

- Required: Calculate the arithmetic mean and the geometric mean over the three-yearperiod for the investments made.arrow_forwardFor an additional fee, a customer purchasing a Whirlpool appliance, such as washing machine, can purchase a three year service contract. The contract provides free repair service and parts for the specified appliance using an authorized Whirlpool service provider. When a person with Whirlpool service contract needs to repair an appliance such as washing machine, he or she calls the whirlpool repairs and parts department to schedule an appointment. The department makes the appointment and gives the caller the date and approximate time of the appointment. This process is very lengthy. It may take two weeks to schedule a repair visit. In above case what changes could be made to make this process more efficient with the development of Information system. Discuss in detail various phases of System Development life cycle that are involved in this case.arrow_forwardScenario 3: Falsifying Attendance Jason, a Junior System Administrator with the Management Information Systems Department, clocked in 4 minutes and 27 seconds late for work this morning. While he won’t get fired for it, being late this once means that he will not receive the perfect attendance incentive which he needs to make ends meet, given his daughter’s recent series of hospitalizations. It’s not that Jason didn’t make an effort to be there on time. He actually arrived in the office five minutes early but was unable to clock in immediately because his direct superior, Raffy, asked him for an informal project progress report as soon as he walked in the door. As a Junior System Administrator, Jason has access and the capability to edit the company’s attendance records. He figures that since he was unable to punch in only because of his boss, it wouldn’t hurt to edit the timestamp on his attendance for today. - Gary's Shoes and Accessories is attempting to quantify the value of a loyal customer. Al Bundy, Gary's data analyst, has carefully analyzed ten years of data and determined that its customers tend to purchase a new pair of shoes every two years and its customer defection rate is 25%. Gary's fixed costs are 20%, and it makes a before-tax profit of 10%. The revenue for the store's Peggy line of shoes, which accounts for virtually all of the sales, is $250. An aggressive marketing campaign is planned that Al estimates will increase the store's share of customers by 8,000. The plant runs three shifts continuously during the workweek, for a total of 120 hours of capacity per week. The shop efficiency (the percent of total time available for production), which accounts for setups, changeovers, and maintenance, averages 70% with a standard deviation of 5%, which reduces the weekly capacity. Six key parts are produced, and the plant has three different types of machines to produce each part. The machines are not interchangeable as they each have a specific function. The time to produce each part on each machine varies.
