Figure 10.7 Why was Dolly a Finn-Dorset and not a Scottish Blackface sheep?
To determine:
Dolly is a Fin-Dorset, not a Scottish Blackface sheep.
Introduction:
Dolly was the first recombinant cloned sheep that was produced by transferring the genetic material from somatic cells of a Fin-Dorset sheep into the egg cells of a Scottish Blackfire sheep.
Explanation of Solution
The genetic material is responsible for the characteristics or phenotype of an organism. The proteins are translated from the genetic material, which ensures the pleasures expressed in it. Since, the genetic material in Dolly sheep was from a Finn-Dorset it has its characteristics. The Scottish Blackface sheep only provided an empty egg cell and its uterus as a surrogate mother.
The genetic material in Dolly sheep came from a Finn-Dorset and therefore, it has the characteristics of Finn-Dorset and not Scottish Blackface sheep.

What are some examples of genetic traits that, in contrast, sometimes result in discrimination and prejudice?arrow_forwardFrom the 1700s to the early 1950s there was an unusually high percentage of deaf people on the island of Martha’s Vineyard off the coast of Massachusetts, USA.Deafness was a recessive hereditary trait, and there was a very small population of people living on the island. This meant that almost everyone had both deaf and hearing siblings. In the mid-1850s, the frequency of deaf people on the island was well over 30% higher than the U.S. national average. The high frequency of deaf individuals on the island of Martha’s Vineyard is best explained by Select one: a. genetic drift b. founder effect c. non-random mating d. bottleneck effectarrow_forward

Mutants have black/brown striped legs and short mandibles. You perform a cross between wild type and mutant spiders. Your results : 5,502 wild type; 5,877 mutant; 69 black/brown striped, long mandibles; 52 black, short mandibles. What information does the recombination frequency tell you about the traits? (You will need to solve the RF first if you haven't done so in the other problem.) * A. Crossing over occurs frequently between the two traits. B. They are unlinked genes. C. They are located on separate chromosomes D. They are located very close together on the same chromosome.arrow_forward
