The sliding filament theory of contraction.
Introduction:
Muscle fibers contain myofilaments (actin and myosin) that are arranged in the form of specialized contractile organelles called myofibrils. Each myofibril is surrounded by sarcoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria, and glycosomes. The myofibril contains repeating units of sarcomere. I (isotropic) and A (anisotropic) bands of sarcomere give the muscle tissue its striated appearance.
