Concept Introduction:

A substance which is formed by melting together two or more elements, of which one is metal, is known as an alloy.

The components of an alloy cannot be separated by physical methods.

Solid-solution strengthening is defined as increasing the strength of a pure material by alloying it by adding atoms of another element in the crystalline lattice of the pure material.

In a pure solid material, the propagation of the induced dislocations in its crystalline lattice decides the strength of it. Depending on the character of the material and the type of dislocations, stress fields are created within the lattice of the material. When atoms of solute are introduced in this pure material, local stress fields are created which interact with the dislocations present in the pure material. This increases the strength of the material.

The process described above is known as solid-solution strengthening.
