Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
Laundry detergent in water has to be given as acidic or basic solution.
Concept Introduction:
Acidic solutions: Acidic solutions have a sour taste and produce hydrogen ions, when dissolved in water. They neutralize bases to produce salts and water. An acidic solution turns blue litmus paper red.
Basic solution: Basic solutions have a bitter taste and they feel slippery when touched. They produce hydroxide ions, when dissolved in water. They neutralize acids to produce salts and water. A basic solution turns red litmus paper blue.
(b)
Interpretation:
Orange juice has to be given as acidic or basic solution.
Concept Introduction:
Refer to part (a).
(c)
Interpretation:
Jam has to be given as acidic or basic solution.
Concept Introduction:
Refer to part (a).
(d)
Interpretation:
Bicarbonate of soda in water has to be given as acidic or basic solution.
Concept Introduction:
Refer to part (a).
