The images of trees in Figure P1.68 come from a catalog advertising fast-growing trees. If we mark the position of the top of the tree in the successive years, as shown in the graph in the figure, we obtain a motion diagram much like ones we have seen for other kinds of motion. The motion isn't steady, of course. In some months the tree grows rapidly; in other months, quite slowly. We can see, though, that the average speed of growth is fairly constant for the first few years.

- You are driving 65.0 miles/hour and you see a police car, so you slow down to 42.5 miles/hour. It takes you 3 seconds to do this. What is your deceleration? (I asked this one before, but someone plugged in -22.5 miles/hr x 2.237 m/s / 1 mile an hour which I didn't understand)arrow_forwardA bird flies north at 20m/sec for 15 sec. it rest for 5 sec and then flies south at 25 m/sec for 10 sec. for the whole trip, what .is the average speedarrow_forwardHeyarrow_forward
- As you are driving to school one day, you pass a construction site of a new building and you stop to watch for a few minutes. A crane is lifting a batch of bricks on a pallet to an upper floor of the building. Suddenly a brick falls off the rising pallet. You measure the time it takes for the brick to hit the ground and you find it to be 2.5 seconds. The crane has height markings. You saw the brick fell off the pallet at a height of 30.7 meters above the ground. A falling brick can be dangerous, and you wonder how fast the brick was moving when it hit the ground. Since you are taking physics, you quickly calculate the answer.arrow_forward1d. A student stands at the edge of a cliff and throws a stone horizontally over the edge with a speed of v0 = 18.5 m/s. The cliff is h = 20.0 m above a flat, horizontal beach as shown in the figure. Write the equations for the position of the stone with time, using the coordinates in the figure. (Use the following as necessary: t. Let the variable t be measured in seconds. Do not state units in your answer.) x= y=arrow_forwardFigure 1 shows the velocity-time graph of a person moving along one straight path called the x-axis. Find the position of the person at t = 10 s and the average velocity between t= 0 and 10 seconds. (b) Identify the time windows during which the person has an non-zero acceleration and find the accelerations in those time windows. (c) For the whole journey from t = 0 to t = 20 s, find the position of the person at t = 20 s and the average velocity.arrow_forward

- An astronaut on the moon throws a baseball upward. The astronaut is 6 ft, 6 in. tall, and the initial velocity of the ball is 50 ft per sec. The heights of the ball in feet is given by the equation s= -2.71² +50t+6.5, where t is the number of seconds after the ball was thrown. Complete parts a and b. a. After how many seconds is the ball 18 ft above the moon's surface? After seconds the ball will be 18 ft above the moon's surface. (Round to the nearest hundredth as needed.
