Milk and Cartilage (Example 10) Cartilage is a smooth, rubberlike padding that protects the long bones in the body at the joints. A study by Lu et. al. in Arthritis Care & Research found that women who drank one glass of milk daily had 32% thicker, healthier cartilage than women who did not. Researchers obtained information on milk consumption through questionnaires and measured cartilage through xrays. In the article, researched conclude, “Our study suggested that frequent milk intake may be associated with reduced OA progression in women.” (Source: Lu et al., “Milk consumption and progression of medial tibiofemoral knee osteoarthritis: Data from the osteoarthritis initiative,” Arthritis Care & Research, vol. 66 [June 2014]: 802-809, https://doi.org/10.10002/acr.22297
Does this study show drinking milk causes increased cartilage production? Why or why not?

National collegiate athletic association injury data show that female athletes injure the ACL more frequently than their male counterparts do. A sports medicine professor wants to test this claim. He surveyed 5 universities that had both men's and woman's basketball, soccer, and volleyball and asked them how many grade 3 ACL tears they had during the past 5 seasons. Using the following results, are women at greater risk than men for ACL injuries? (use a standard deviation of 0.01, one tail test). - A random sample of 50 CSCC students are surveyed to determine what percent of our students are first-generation college students. The results showed that 16 of the students identify as first-generation college students. show your work What is the sample proportion of first-generation college students at CSCC? Is this an example of a parameter or a statistic? Explain.arrow_forwardEmpathy among police officers influences how they interact with citizens and the likelihood that they receive complaints. Gender differences in levels of empathy in the general population are not large but male and female officers have been shown to have different interaction styles with the public; this may be due to the different empathy levels. After sampling officers and measuring their levels of empathy you find the following data. Males Females n = 6 n = 9 M = 31 M = 45 SS = 490 SS = 680 Based on these results, is there a significant difference between the attitudes for males and for females? Use a two-tailed test with = .05. (Use 3 decimal places.) t-critical = ± 2.160 t = -2.80 What is your conclusion? Write A, B, C, or D in the box. [d]Option A. Reject the null hypothesis, there is a significant difference in empathy between male and female officers.Option B. Accept the null hypothesis, there is not a significant difference in empathy between male and…arrow_forwardThe table below refers to a case control study on the association between sulfones and streptomycin drugs in the treatment of leprosy. Subjects were sampled based on their clinical change to treatment and then asked whether they had a high or low degree of infiltration. The degree of infiltration measures a type of skin damage. We will use clinical change response scores {-1, 0, 1, 2, 3}. The question of interest is whether degree of infiltration is associated with clinical change. (a) Compute the sample proportions of having a high degree of infiltration for each clinical change group? What type of variable is Clinical Change? (B)Conduct a Cochran-Armitage trend test at the 5% significance level to determine whether there is an association between degree of infiltration and clinical change. (C)Now, ignore the fact that clinical change is an ordinal variable. Conduct a chi-squared test for association between degree of infiltration and clinical change at the 5% significance…arrow_forward

Which isdescribed by a parameter and which is described by a statistic?arrow_forwardA researcher conducts a study to investigate whether the obesity rate rural communities differ from the obesity rate from the population at large. He gathered a sample of adults from a small community, measured their weight, and compared it to the population average. What statistical test is appropriate for this study and why?arrow_forwardWhat is the difference between a parameter and a statistic? A parameter is a numerical description of a characteristic.
