Concept explainers
Interpretation:
Five characteristics of Science that differentiates it from other disciplines should be explained.
Concept Introduction:
Characteristics of a discipline are qualities that make it survive and appreciated. Different things embody different characteristics. For example, birds fly, this is their characteristic. Similarly, science as a discipline also has some characteristics that differentiates it from other disciplines.

Answer to Problem 1RQ
Solution:
Five characteristics of Science are:
- Neutrality of approach
- Endurance
- Methodical exploration
- Correct precision
- Perseverance
The characteristic that serves best to distinguish science from other disciplines is Neutrality of approach.
Explanation of Solution
- Neutrality of approach: It is a characteristic of science because in science, you cannot have any preset notions about a phenomenon. Everything and anything is possible unless proven otherwise.
- Endurance: All scientific results should stand the test of time. One should be very cautious while proposing results and the results should be reproducible to rule out foul play.
- Methodical exploration: Scientific experiments should be done in a very systematic manner. If done in a haphazard manner, it may be dangerous for you and others near you.
- Correct precision: Science predicts precise actions. For example: we can predict rains and storms using satellites which is a gift of science.
- Perseverance: To make an impact through science on the world may take a lifetime. There are many great scientists who have given their entire lives to create something path breaking. Only thing that kept them going was their perseverance.
The characteristic that serves best to distinguish science from other disciplines is Neutrality of approach because in other disciplines you may have a small bias with respect to previous research. But in Science you have to keep an open mind and start from scratch for every new experiment.
Hence, five characteristics of Science are:
- Neutrality of approach
- Endurance
- Methodical exploration
- Correct precision
- Perseverance
The characteristic that serves best to distinguish science from other disciplines is Neutrality of approach
