Question

Young children tend to be overly optimistic about their skill level. In what ways would a young child show this perception of themselves? How does this information help parents, caregivers, and teachers nurture young children?

Expert Solution
Dunning-Kruger effect

The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias whereby people greatly overestimate their skill or competence in a particular domain because they are unaware of the skill levels of others and the objective criteria by which skill is judged. This may occur at any stage of life but children show this effect to a great extent and tend to be overly optimistic about their skill level. In the next two sections, we see the areas in which children may exhibit this optimism and how parents, teachers, and caregivers can factor this into their nurturance of young minds.
