Expert Solution
Perspectives of dissociative identity disorder

Dissociative identity disorder falls under the category of dissociative and somatic symptom disorders and is characterized chiefly by the presence of multiple, distinct personalities, which are actually fragments of one integrated personality. Some other symptoms of the disorder are amnesia of certain periods, events, or people associated with periods of dissociation, a sense of detachment from and unreality of the self, significant problems in interpersonal relationships, and other associated mental health issues like depressive and suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

Dissociative identity disorder can be looked at through a few major perspectives like the biological approach, the psychodynamic approach, the cognitive approach, or the sociocultural approach. The following two sections elaborate on two of the most widely used approaches in explaining DID, namely, the psychodynamic and the sociocultural approaches.
