Memory is a cognitive process for storing and retrieving information. Human memory processes is divided into 3 primary stages. These include encoding, storage and retrieval.
As per Atkinson and Shiffrin, there are basically 3 basic memory system, these are sensory memory, short term memory (STM) and long term memory (LTM).
Sensory memory, is a temporary storage of sensory information, but it has high capacity. It holds visual information for less than one second and auditory information for few seconds. Human beings are constantly bombarded with infinite information, but information from sensory memory enters the short term memory when it becomes the focus of an individual's attention. Information that doesn't receive human attention fades away quickly. Thus, individuals selectively attending to the information enters the short term memory. Information in the short term memory is stored for maximum 30 seconds and STM has limited capacity. Information in STM enters LTM, through elaborative rehearsal. Elaborative rehearsal denotes, when the information present in the STM is analyzed in terms of its meaning and is associated with other informations present in the LTM. Unless individuals carry out elaborative rehearsal, informations that are present in the STM shall fade away and will get lost completely. Only repeating information silently to oneself will not help information present in STM to move into LTM.
The memory has 3 main stages. These include acquisition, retention and retrieval. An already retained information can be retrieved in the form of 2 ways. These are recall and recognition. In the process of recalling information the individual has to remember and reproduce the material that has already been learned verbally, while in the process of recognition, the individual has to recognize the already learned material from amongst other information.
