Expert Solution
Feature integration theory

Feature integration theory is a theory of perception and attention that takes a bottom-up approach to cognitive processes. It explains how individuals combine or integrate bits of the available information in the environment to produce an integrated perception of the object. First proposed by Gelade and Treisman, this theory falls in the domain of visual perception theory.

This theory says that during a visual search, we use visual cues like shape, size, and color to distinguish one object from another. Each of these elements is called a feature and combining these features gives us the perception of the entire object.

Gelade and Treisman described two stages in the theory:

  • In the pre-attention stage, there is an unconscious focus on one distinguishing attribute of the object.
  • In the second stage, processing takes place only if the object has no distinguishing attribute that makes it instantly stand out.
