Salutary neglect was an unofficial British policy formulated by Robert Walpole. The policy was aimed at relaxing the strict enforcement of several parliamentary laws especially in the field of trade in American colonies.  British policymakers like  Walpole relaxed the enforcement of trade laws, stating that without these restrictions the colonies would flourish, which in turn will be beneficial for the British crown.

The policy was unwritten and unnamed till Edmund Burke mentioned British officials' “wise and salutary neglect” as the main reason behind the Commerical successes of Britain while addressing Parliament on March 22, 1775.
