Diffuse goiter during the third semester of the pregnancy results in the rare disorder known as maternal hyperthyroidism.
Grave’s disease is a condition in which there occurs diffuse toxic goiter, which is characterized by the production of autoantibodies which activates the TSH receptor. These autoantibodies cross the placenta and can cause fetal and neonatal thyroid dysfunctioning
Most discriminating features of hyperthyroidism in pregnancy are-
tremors, tachychardia, weight loss, murmur, lid lag and exophthalmos.
Treatment :
Antithyroid antibodies are commonly prescribed to the patients suffering from the disease.
