When counting calories what do you multiply or divide with to get the number that you're wanting for the resident or patient and please use an example
For calculating the maintenance calories u need two components:
- Resting metabolic rate(RMR) : rate of calories burned at rest
- Activity multiplier( AM): amount of calories burned throughout the day while doing Activity.
Resting metabolic rate
RMR can be calculated by the Harris benedict equation
For male :
RMR=66+ (5 ×height in cm ) +(13.8× weight in kg ) - (6.8× Age)
For female:
RMR = 655+(1.8×height)+(9.6×weight) - (4.7× age)
There is another formula to calculate the basal metabolic rate
BMR or RMR = body weight × 22
Activity multiplier
sedentary 3 to 6 days = 1.3 - 1.6
Moderate active 3 to 6 days = 1.5 - 1.8
Active 3 to 6 days = 1.7 - 2.0
Highly active 3 to 6 days = 1.9 - 2.2
This all are the standard value for the range
For calculating the maintenance calories formula is :
RESTING METABOLIC RATE × ACTIVITY MULTIPLIER + thermic effect of food = MAINTENANCE CALORIES
so , we multiply the Activity multiplier with the resting metabolic rate
This is the calories which is needed to maintain the current weight
