Virginia was the first successful British colony to be established in North America. Virginia Company was chartered in 1606 by King James I, to establish settlements along the east coast of North America. The Company and later colony were named after English Queen Elizabeth I who was referred to as the Virgin Queen. The first settlement was established in 1607 in Jamestown along the James River. In 1624, the company charter was revoked and Virginia was made a crown colony.
