John Harrison was a self-taught English carpenter and watchmaker who invented nautical chronology as a long-term solution to the problem of calculating longitude at sea. Time-consuming tool. James Cook FRS was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer and captain of the British Royal Navy, best known for his three voyages across the Pacific Ocean and Australia between 1768 and 1779. He made detailed maps of Newfoundland before making three voyages to the Pacific, during which time he achieved the first recorded European connection with the east coast of Australia and the islands of Hawaii and recorded New Zealand's first voyage.
