What is the paradox of hedonism?

Expert Solution
What is Hedonism?

Hedonism is a philosophical theory that states pleasure is what determines human behavior. This theory states that humans generally tend to engage in behavior that results in pleasure rather than pain.

This theory proposes that individuals tend to seek pleasure for themselves beyond anything. Thus leaving little significance to virtues and values. In simple words, hedonism is to improve the total pleasure-seeking experiences than pain.

Hedonism is revived by Jeremy Bentham, stating that individuals have no other goal than pursuing the greatest pleasures. This theory is a part of utilitarianism, which states that decisions are fostered by actions that derive happiness and oppose harm. The only part in which they differ is, that hedonism is concerned with individual self-interests, while utilitarianism has to do a lot with society as a whole.
