Step 1: Introduction:
I. Classification System
- The DEA has established 5 schedules of controlled substances from Schedule I to Schedule V
- The higher the schedule, the more restrictive the regulations
- The lower the schedule, the more accepted the medical use and lower potential for abuse
II. Schedule I
- Most dangerous, with no acknowledged medicinal application
- High potential for abuse and addiction
- May cause severe harm
- Examples: heroin, LSD, marijuana, ecstasy, peyote
III. Schedule II
- Very dangerous with high potential for abuse and addiction
- Have some accepted medical uses but with severe restrictions
- May cause severe dependence and fatal overdose
- Examples: cocaine, methamphetamine, oxycodone, fentanyl, Adderall
IV. Schedule III
- Abuse and addiction risk is moderate to low.
- Have accepted medical uses but may cause moderate dependence
- Examples: ketamine, anabolic steroids, testosterone, codeine products <90mg
V. Schedule IV
- Low potential for abuse and addiction
- Have accepted medical uses but may cause limited dependence
- Examples: alprazolam, diazepam, tramadol, zolpidem
VI. Schedule V
- Lowest potential for abuse and addiction
- Have accepted medical uses but may cause minimal dependence
- Mostly preparations with limited narcotics
- Examples: low-dose codeine cough syrup, lacosamide, pregabalin, ezogabine
