The Roman Empire was a vast political and cultural entity that existed for over a thousand years and spanned three continents. It began as a small city-state in central Italy in 753 BC and grew to become the largest empire in the world by the second century AD. At its height, it encompassed nearly all of Europe, parts of Asia, and North Africa. The Roman Empire was ruled by a series of emperors who oversaw a complex bureaucracy, built impressive infrastructure, and maintained a strong military. It was also known for its impressive art and architecture, literature, and engineering feats. The decline of the Roman Empire began in the third century AD and it eventually fell in the fifth century. Its legacy, however, continues to influence western civilization to this day.
