What does the John Brown cartoon mean and stand for?
John Brown, an American abolitionist most known for his botched 1859 attempt to take control of a government arsenal in Harpers Ferry, Virginia, devoted his life to the fight against slavery and racial injustice. Since Brown thought that violence was necessary to end slavery, his actions helped to ignite the abolitionist movement in the United States. As a result, slavery was finally abolished and the American Civil War began. Although having a reputation for being controversial in his day, John Brown is today universally regarded as a hero and martyr for his unwavering dedication to justice and equality.
