Question

What are the section properties of the neutral axis?

Expert Solution
Step 1

To find-:

The section properties of the neutral axis.

Answer-:

The geometric properties are known as section properties. The section properties play a vital role in the designing of the beams. These properties purely depend on the beam's shape, like T-shaped, I-shaped, and rectangular beam. For every shape, the calculated sectional properties are different. The variables that are taken in the calculation for these properties are taken according to their distance from the neutral axis. The result of these section properties of the neutral axis is known as the elastic section modulus.

The expression for the elastic section modulus is-:

S=Iy

Here S is the elastic section modulus, I is the area moment of inertia and y is the distance from the neutral axis.

Foe example-:

The expression for the rectangular beam is-:

S=Bh26

 Here B is the breadth and h is the height from the neutral axis.

The expression for the I section beam is-:

S=Bh26-bh36H

 Here, B is the full breadth of the I section and b is the half and H and h are the heights of the section.

 Thus, the section properties of the neutral axis are explained.
