Preparation for the Laboratory
Review the section on reflux and simple distillation in your techniques manual.
Review the reaction mechanism from lecture notes. Complete the pre-laboratory
report. Remember that anytime a synthesis is performed, the reaction (and if known,
the mechanism) should be included in the objective/introduction. Do not worry about
the exact structure of Montmorillonite KSF clay for the chemical data table. The
purpose of this reagent is to act as the catalyst and dehydration agent. Obtain
appropriate spectra of reactants and products from the SDBS Spectral Database.
Procedure
1. To a 25 mL round bottom flask, add 5 mL of 2-methylcyclohexanol and 0.25 g of
Montmorillonite KSF Clay with a magnetic stirring bar.
2. Attach a condenser and reflux the solution while stirring for 90 minutes. Make
sure to set up the water pumps correctly. Set up the apparatus to heat on the
heating mantle on top of a stir plate.
3. Remove the flask from the heating mantle and allow it to cool to close to room
temperature before moving on.
4. Attach a distillation head and perform simple distillation to distill the product
away from the unreacted alcohol and the catalyst. Collect approximately 2 mL
of the product.
5. If time allows, analyze the product via GC MS and determine the percentages of
the different isomers in the product mixture. Otherwise, save product in a clean,
dry scintillation vial and save until the following week. Wrap the seal with
Parafilm.
Safety Concerns
Avoid touching hot glassware with bare hands when adjusting the apparatus.
Though there is low potential for inhalation of the Montmorillonite KSF clay, it
should be noted that there is a toxicity hazard for inhalation of the silicon dioxide
present in the clay.

Montmorillonite KSF Clay can be recycled and reused. Allow the leftover alcohol to
evaporate in the fume hood.

 

My Lab Data: Given that 5 mL of 2-methylcyclohexanol was used, and 0.2501g of Montmorillonite KSF Clay used, and after simple distillation = 1.65 mL of the product was collected.
