Dempster’s History
Dempster’s has been baking great-tasting, fresh baked bread for more than 100 years. With 12 bakeries from British Columbia to Newfoundland, Dempster’s bakes and delivers fresh bread to Canadians every day at mass market, club, grocery and drug stores across Canada. In 1855, James Dempster was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Dempster’s parents, both bakers, taught him the necessary skills of any baker, but he also brought an innate passion and an uncanny skill set to the business of making bread. In the 1870’s the family immigrated to Canada and the family opened their first bakery, Ideal Bakery, in Toronto. A decade later, Dempster opened his first bakery which was later passed to his sons. In 1952, the bakery was sold and the name was changed to Dempsters’ Bread Limited. In 1968, Dempster’s Bread Limited was purchased by a subsidiary of Canada Bread and over time became the company’s national flagship brand and a significant part of Canada’s bakery history. Canada Bread Company, Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Grupo Bimbo since May, 2014, is a leading producer and distributor of packaged fresh bread and bakery products with brands such as Dempster's®, Villaggio®, POM®, Bon Matin®, Ben's®, McGavins®, Vachon® and Stonemill®. In business for more than 100 years, Canada Bread operates 19 bakeries and employs approximately 4,800 associates across Canada. Since the 2014 takeover, there have been some labour issues (plant strikes and lockouts) and plant closings.

Dempster's Brand
Dempster's was voted as the most trusted bread by more than 18,000 Canadians as part of BrandSpark
International's 2018 Most Trusted Awards. In response, the company released this statement: "We are
delighted to be recognized as Canadians' most trusted bread brand. Every day our associates go to work
with one goal: to bake great-tasting, high quality bread that our consumers have come to rely on.
Winning the trust of consumers is key to product loyalty as well as meeting the needs of Canadians with
products they know and love."
In 2018, the Dempster's started to incorporate new positioning based on a "Made By Canada" message.
This included a redesign of its packaging to promote the new positioning. The company removed the
word "bakery" from Dempster's logo and replaced it with "established 1890" to reinforce that heritage.
And incorporated the maple leaf on its packaging and used the tagline "Homemade. Homegrown". The
brand is also offering simplified recipes on the bag, and has streamlined its ingredients.
The Canadian-centred brand strategy was used in Dempster's CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility)
initiative, "Buy a Lunch, Give a Lunch," from August 2018. For the campaign, it donated two million
slices of bread to food banks across Canada, further reinforcing that Dempster's is "made by Canadians,
for Canadians" and that Canadians value kindness and generosity.
