Use the equation for the height of an object (in meters) at time t (in seconds) given below where so is the initial height and vo is the initial velocity. s(t) = so + vot 4.9t? An object is tossed into the air vertically from ground level and returns to Earth 9.9 seconds later. Determine the exact velocity at time t =3.9.

Question

I've really been struggling with this one.

Use the equation for the height of an object (in meters) at timet (in seconds) given below where so
is the initial height and vo is the initial velocity.
s(t)
= 80 + vot – 4.9t²
An object is tossed into the air vertically from ground level and returns to Earth 9.9 seconds later.
Determine the exact velocity at time t =3.9.

Determine the exact velocity at time t =3.9.
Expert Solution
Step 1

Given information:

The position from which the object is tossed(S0) = 0 m (ground)

The time it takes to return to the earth (t) = 9.9 sec

The time at which the velocity is required (t') = 3.9 sec

Given equation of motion:

s(t) = S0+v0t-4.9t

The total displacement at the end is "Zero" i.e. when the body reaches back to ground. we can write this as:

s(t) = S0+v0t-4.9t2=0v0=4.9(9.9)=48.51 m/s
