In the 1890s one sees the expansionist policy of the United States taking place under the ideology of imperialism. This came to mean acquiring territories that could be controlled or extending their influence and hegemony in these regions through trade. There were different reasons as to why such an imperialist policy came to be adopted by the American leaders.
