The British had thirteen colonies in America which supplied it with raw materials and were also the markets for its end products. These American colonies were first set up by the Puritans who had escaped Britain to avoid religious persecution. With time, many other groups arrived which set up their colonies and started their plantations and other industries. Though some of these colonies had their own elected representatives, they were mostly governed by British Laws and Acts.
