KIRBY BAUER METHOD- Antibiotic sensitivity test is performed by using the agar diffusion method in which, a small amount of the antibiotic is taken that is having the potential to inhibit the growth of microorganisms. DIFFERENT TYPES OF ANTIMICROBIAL DRUGS ARE:- 1) BROAD SPECTRUM ANTIBIOTICS- These antibiotics can be used for a variety of microorganisms like it can act on both gram-positive and as well as on gram-negative microorganisms. 2) NARROW SPECTRUM ANTIBIOTICS- These can act on a narrow or on only specific microorganisms. 3) TOXIC- They will release toxins to kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms with no or minimal harm to the host. 4) BACTERIOSTATIC- This will inhibit the growth but as soon as the drug is withdrawn the bacteria will resume its growth. 5) BACTERIOCIDAL- They are very lethal to bacteria cause immediate killing of it.1) SUSCEPTIBLE- Microorganisms cannot grow if the particular drug is present. 2) RESISTANT- Microorganism can grow even if the drug is present. This antibiotic is not effective. 3) INTERMEDIATE- Antibiotic dose should be given a little high to prevent the growth of microorganisms If the zone of inhibition of Erythromycin is 10 then it indicates that it is under the resistant category because it's range lies up to 13 or less than this.
