The free body diagram of the rudder. (b) If the maximum permissible load that the steel operational cable can handle is 3kN, determine whether it can handle the load of the rudder or not. (c) Determine the resultant load on the fixed pivot (A) and the angle at which it acts. (d) If the thickness of the rudder is included, describe which method you would use to find the centre of gravity? How would this value differ from the calculation using a lamina modelling assumption?

(c) Determine the resultant load on the fixed pivot (A) and the angle at which it acts.

(d) If the thickness of the rudder is included, describe which method you would use to find the centre of gravity? How would this value differ from the calculation using a lamina modelling assumption?

Problem A: Analysis of light aircraft rudder
The rudder of an aircraft is usually found at the tail and is responsible for allowing the pilot to control
the yaw about the vertical axis. Figure 2 shows a typical rear setup of a small aircraft, with the rudder
coloured in gold. During maintenance, one way of mounting the rudder is to place one edge on a
fixed pivot, whilst attaching the other edge on the end of an operational cable. Figure 3 shows an
example of such a setup.
