The maximum rate of oxygen consumption during exercise of increasing intensity is called VO2 peak. Such an exercise is called incremental exercise as the intensity is gradually increasing.
V stands for volume, O2 for oxygen and peak is the maximal oxygen consumption in volume per unit time.
Significance:- It denotes the fact that after achieving peak VO2, oxygen consumption doesn't increase further even on increasing the intensity of exercise. Thus anerobic respiration will ensue to derive energy for further exercise and it will limit the exercise capacity by formation of lati acid.
Therefore the performance intensity is represented by VO2 peak. Greater the VO2 peak, more is the maximum oxygen consumption, greater is the time duration of exercise effort.
It is a measure of cardiorespiratory fitness. People with greater VO2 peak have greater longevity usually.
It is also a measure of exercise endurance. Long distance runners and athletes usually have greater VO2 maximum and can therefore perform aerobic exercise for longer periods, therefore the lactic acid buildup in anerobic respiration doesn't occur for a long period in these, therefore fatiguability is lower.
