Remember that you have two data sets, so you will be completing the process twice, once for the group of children that participated in meal preparation, and once for the group of children that did not participate (You are NOT testing the difference between the two means, e.g. Ho: �1 = �2).

Use 95% as a level of significance, and make sure to report all important statistics with your results, including the mean of each group, the standard deviation of each group, the t–statistic, the critical t values, the p-value, etc.  For each group, include a normal distribution sketch, highlighting the rejection regions.  Test each claim two ways, using the critical value method, and the p-value method (see page 387).

Hypothesis Testing

  1. Define the null and alternative hypotheses.
  2. Choose the level of significance (alpha value).
  3. Select the appropriate test statistic. The test statistic measures the standardized discrepancy between the claim (under the null hypothesis) and the evidence.
  4. Draw the rejection region. The rejection region contains the values of the test statistic for which the null hypothesis should be rejected. This region is found by determining the appropriate critical value(s) based on the significance level (alpha).
  5. Collect the data, calculate the appropriate test statistic, and determine if it falls within the region of rejection or non-rejection.
