Question 1
After graduating from university with a degree in chemical engineering, Anthony found a well-
paying job close to his community. This job is an answer to prayers because he has a large student
loan to pay off and both parents, having contracted the dreaded COVID-19 infection, are out of
work showing signs of long-term effects. His younger siblings depend upon him for help with their
education and he has had to shoulder much of the household expenses. Anthony does not mind,
however, because he remembers that his parents endured a lot of hardship for him complete his
university studies and he feels it is his duty to help them in every way he can. This job opportunity,
therefore, could not have come at a better time.
After a few months, Anthony accidentally found out that his company was dumping highly toxic
chemical waste in a nearby river to avoid the cost of disposing of it appropriately. This is causing
severe health and environmental problems to folks in the community who recently discovered a
lot of dead fish floating on the water's surface. Also, children who play in the river are breaking
out in awful boils and sores and women who wash clothes in it are showing signs of serious hand
infection.
Anthony, with his moral and Christian upbringing, is deeply disturbed by what he has discovered.
He sees the plight of members of his community and his conscience will not let him sleep at nights.
One day, he braced himself to speak with a colleague whom he trusts about the company's
activities. The colleague told him that that had been going on for some time and he should mind
his own business and look the other way. Further, the co-worker told him, he could be dismissed
from the job and branded as an 'informer'.
This advice has only deepened Anthony's distress. He certainly did not want to lose his job with
family members so heavily dependent upon him. Neither did he want to be known as an informer
and he may well cause the closure of the company. Should he stick his neck out and tell the
authorities? Or should he keep his mouth shut and look the other way? He then recalled the words
of his grandmother of blessed memory whom he and his siblings always visited in the country
