The beach I like the most is one that has a little island not far away, about 400 metres from the beach. It's
not much more than a big rock, really. I loved swimming there, climbing onto it for a little rest and then
when I was ready, I would swim back. But last summer, something happened to make me change my
mind.
One day, l'd swum to the rock as usual and I was sitting in the sun getting warm when suddenly I saw a
big black shape swimming slowly in front of me. It looked like an enormous black fish and it swam
around the rock twice and then came up to the surface. It was a gigantic shark! Obviously, I decided to sit
there and wait for it to go away!
The shark did not go away! It felt like l'd been there for hours and I was beginning to get really
frightened. Just then, something truly wonderful happened. The shark was joined by four more black
shapes - dolphins! l'd read somewhere that a shark on its own will not attack dolphins, and it seems to be
true because the shark started to swim away! The dolphins seemed to be talking to me. I was sure they
were telling me that it was now safe for me to swim baack,
As soon as l'd got back into the sea, one of the dolphins went in front of me, one went on each side of me
and the remaining one took up its place behind me, and we set off. They swam at exactly the same speed
as me, and afler a while we reached the safety of the beach. I got out and just sat on the sand, tired but so
relieved, and my new friends swam off.
I haven't seen them since, but I will never forget them and the way they saved me from a really difficult
situation.
15. The writer already knew some facts about sharks and dolphins.
