Question

Trace the fate of hydrogens removed from glucose during glycolysis when oxygen is present in muscle cells; compare this to the fate of hydrogens  removed from glucose when the amount of available oxygen is insufficient to support aerobic respiration.

Expert Solution
Step 1 Introduction:

Glycolysis is a cytoplasmic pathway that breaks down glucose into two three-carbon compounds and generates energy.

Step 2 Concept:

Glycolysis is the initial stage of glucose metabolism, takes place in the cytosol and does not involve molecular oxygen. It produces a small amount of ATP and the three-carbon compound pyruvate. In Aerobic cells, pyruvate formed in glycolysis is transported into the mitochondria where it is oxidized by oxygen to carbon dioxide through the chemiosmotic coupling, the oxidation of pyruvate in the mitochondria generates the bulk of the ATP produced during the conversion of glucose to CO2
