Questions A) what is the independent and dependent variable. B) what were the results of the experiment based on the information within the figure?
Using three-dimensional computer animations of chimpanzees either yawning or with relaxed facial expressions, Mathew Campbell and his colleagues conducted an experiment. The chimpanzees were shown each film in the following ways. The relaxed facial expressions were shown to one half of the chimpanzees first, followed by the yawning animations, and the other half was shown the yawning animations followed by relaxed facial expressions. The number of times the chimpanzees yawned was counted by the researchers as they watched the recordings.
The cause is the independent variable. The other factors in the experimental study generally have no bearing on its value. The outcome is the dependent variable. Changes in the independent variable affect how this value changes.
In this experiment,
Independent variable is the yawn animations.
Dependent variable is the number of yawns.
The fact that the apes responded to the yawn animations more strongly than the controls, as evident from the graphical representation, suggests that they were able to identify with them. These findings point to an empathic response to animations and confirm the observation that chimpanzees can spread yawning. Understanding how chimpanzees interact with animations to both imitate and empathise can aid in our understanding of how humans do the same.
